LSU Advances Nutrition Education and Health Innovation

BATON ROUGE 鈥撯疞SU Health New Orleans and LSU Health Shreveport, now part of the new LSU Flagship, are joining a national to enhance nutrition education for future physicians. This effort reinforces LSU鈥檚 commitment to research, education, and service that addresses Louisiana鈥檚 needs for improved health outcomes.  

Alongside universities such as the University of Wisconsin, University of Florida, University of California-Irvine, and other prestigious schools, LSU Health New Orleans and LSU Health Shreveport will require at least鈥40 hours鈥痮f nutrition education, or an equivalent competency, for medical students to meet national standards beginning in鈥疐all 2026. This coordinated effort highlights how LSU鈥檚 health sciences centers are collaborating to address evolving priorities in medical education and patient care.鈥 

For LSU, this initiative builds on the university鈥檚鈥痵trategic priorities鈥痑nd鈥痶radition of鈥痠nterdisciplinary collaboration鈥痑cross the new Flagship to address critical challenges, including chronic disease, preventive care, and physician workforce development, leveraging research strength and educational excellence across all five campuses.鈥 

鈥淏y integrating academic training with research and patient-centered care, the LSU Research Flagship is developing solutions that benefit Louisiana communities and have broad national significance,鈥 said LSU Chancellor Jim Dalton. 

Nutrition education is considered a gap in America鈥檚 medical training, with 75% of medical schools requiring no clinical nutrition coursework and鈥痩ess than 1%鈥痮f total lecture hours touch on nutrition. As a result, only 14% of current health care providers feel comfortable discussing nutrition with their patients.
