Jennifer Qian, EdDBATON ROUGE, LA Jennifer Qian, EdD, associate professor in the Lutrill & Pearl Payne School of Education (SOE), is advancing interdisciplinary research ǿ޴ý through her participation in two projects that received seed funding from the in the “Big Ideas in STEM and Social & Behavioral Sciences” category.

“Technology alone does not make human learning better; the right pedagogy determines whether technology truly makes a difference," Qian said. "I am excited for these interdisciplinary opportunities to help design pedagogically sound uses of VR, AR and AI that make workforce training safer, more effective and better prepared for human collaboration with emerging technologies.”

Qian will use her expertise in educational technology and pedagogy on two research projects focused on workforce training and human-AI interaction. In one project led by Amirhosein Jafari, PhD, associate professor of construction management in the LSU College of Engineering, she will contribute to developing a training framework that uses virtual reality, augmented reality, and AI feedback to improve how construction workers learn to safely and effectively collaborate with robots as automation increases in the industry. In the second project, led by Yanyu Wang, PhD, assistant professor of construction management in the LSU College of Engineering, she will support the creation of a virtual reality–based training curriculum where workers practice infrastructure inspections alongside AI agents, helping build a more skilled workforce to meet Louisiana’s growing energy infrastructure demands while ensuring training is both safe and effective.

Qian currently leads the educational technology program in SOE. Her research areas include technology-enabled academic innovation, technology leadership, emerging technologies, and pedagogical use of AI. She also serves as the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Innovative Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.

The LSU Provost’s Fund for Innovation in Research has invested $1.8 million in seed funding for interdisciplinary research and creative works that promote “big ideas” to improve lives. This internal grant program supports the university’s fierce commitment to becoming a top 50 U.S. research university and a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU). Its core purpose is to increase the competitiveness of LSU scholars in their pursuit of federal and extramural funding and highly prestigious awards. In total, the funded projects will engage more than 75 faculty across 10 colleges and schools on LSU’s flagship campus in Baton Rouge, extending collaboration to LSU Libraries, the LSU Center for Computation & Technology, LSU AgCenter, and the LSU Museum of Natural Science.
